Slow Car

Picture
Lesson Objectives:
  1. Students will learn about gear ratios.
  2. Students will build a car using a gear train to minimize speed.

Materials:
  • 2 motors
  • EV3 brick with Wifi dongle and SD card (you should have access to the EV3 IDE)
  • Any other LEGO parts you need to build a car
  • Any combination of gears you need

Let's Get Started!

Go ahead and make a car of your design that incorporates the EV3 and the two motors. Since the coding component for this activity is basic, you may use on-brick programming.

Start by making a gear train that gears down, and then work on adding this back to the car. Calculating the gear ratios as you go will help you understand how much slower your final output will be. For more information on gears click here.
