Lesson Objectives:
  1. Students will use SAM Labs to build a simple car.
  2. Students will learn some basic Blockly programming using SAM Labs.
  3. Students will learn to control lights and motors in SAM Blockly.

Materials:
  • SAM Labs kit with DC motors and an RGB light
  • Computer or tablet
  • Optional: Craft materials, LEGO minifigures and bricks

Let's Get Started!

Use SAM Labs to create a dancer with lights and motors. The dance program should include a repeating sequence of lights and movement.
Show students how to turn on the SAM blocks and connect them to their computer/tablet via Bluetooth. For this activity, they will need two DC motor blocks and one RGB light block.
Demonstrate the basics of SAM Blockly programming to the students. In particular, they will need to know how to use a loop and how to control the motors and lights, both the LED light and the colored lights in the blocks themselves.
The students can use their dancing car as a platform for LEGO minifigures or other dancers. Or, if they wish, they may turn the car itself into a dancing creature.
