Grove Zero Musical Instrument

Picture
Lesson Objectives:
  1. Students will use the Grove Zero to construct a simple musical instrument.
  2. Students will learn to use sensors.
  3. Students will learn to control the buzzer using a sensor.

Materials:
  • Grove Zero kit
  • Craft materials and/or LEGO bricks
  • For Module Matcher extension: computer with Module Matcher installed

Let's Get Started!

Use the Grove Zero to create a musical instrument, using the tilt sensor to control the buzzer. The pitch of the tone produced by the buzzer will vary with the degree of tilt, allowing the student to play a tune by tilting the sensor back and forth. The circuit must include a power module and a main board module in addition to the sensor and buzzer.
Once the students have made working circuits, have them add LEGO bricks and/or craft materials to create a musical instrument.

Extension:

Use the Module Matcher to create a more sophisticated musical instrument by programming a sensor to control the buzzer. For example, the program below lets the student play three different notes, B,A, and G, using combinations of buttons on the Twin Button sensor.
