Foot Bridge
Lesson Objectives:
Materials:
- Students will use craft materials to create a bridge that meets a set of requirements.
- Students will use the concepts of tension and compression in designing their bridges.
- Students will construct stable free-standing structures.
- Students will test and modify their designs.
Materials:
- Craft materials
- Poster board for bases
- 110-gram masses
- Rulers
- Markers
Let's Get Started!
Review the concepts of tension and compression with the students.
Have students measure and color a twelve-inch-wide river on their poster board. Tell the students that they will be making a "foot bridge," a bridge that will span a foot-wide river and will support a 100-gram weight. Provide craft materials and plenty of time for testing and redesign.
