100 Cubic Centimeter Box

Picture
Lesson Objectives:
  1. Students will experiment with the concept of volume to design a box that encloses a specified volume.
  2. Students will use design software to design their box.

Materials:
  • Cardstock
  • Glue
  • Laser cutter or vinyl cutter
  • Design software

Let's Get Started!

Review the concept of volume with the students. Explain that they will be desingng a box that will enclose exactly 100 cubic centimeters. The dimensions of the box are up to them—as long as it encloses 100 cubic centimeters of space. Cylinders and rectangular solids are the easiest designs for a beginner, but many different shapes are possible.
The box cutting can be done on a laser cutter or vinyl cutter. Provide an introduction to the design software the students will be using (for example, Inkscape or Silhouette Design Studio). Show the students how to include tabs in their designs so that they will be able to glue the sides of the box together.
If time permits, have students design a second box of a different shape.
